Thermo Electron Named Life Science Instrument Company of the Year

Thermo Electron Corporation received Frost & Sullivan"s Life Science Instrument Company of the Year award at a recent event in San Diego honoring excellence in the global healthcare and life sciences industries. A world leader in growth consulting, Frost & Sullivan grants annual awards for outstanding accomplishments in business development, competitive strategy, and customer service leadership within a particular industry.

In addition to recognizing Thermo Electron"s leading position in the worldwide life sciences marketplace, Frost & Sullivan cited Thermo"s success with its new integrated commercial strategy, which promotes cross-selling among its comprehensive product offerings. Sinead Igoe, industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan, said, "With a strong focus on providing total customer solutions, Thermo"s goal is to simplify the way customers interact with its commercial organization. The company can offer researchers virtually everything needed to outfit a lab, from equipment to prepare and analyze samples to software that manages all the data."

Marijn E. Dekkers, president and chief executive officer of Thermo, commented, "We are gratified to be recognized for our accomplishments in serving the life sciences industry. As today"s research environment presents increasing productivity, quality, and regulatory challenges for our customers, we are proud to offer complete solutions that help them attain better results, faster. We provide the tools - under a single Thermo brand - that allow our customers to focus on their important research objectives."

Although Thermo Electron has grown into a multi-billion-dollar company during the last 50 years, until recently the Thermo name was virtually unknown to the scientists and laboratory researchers who were using its products. The company has re-branded well-known product lines acquired during that time - such as Finnigan, Nicolet, BioStar, Shandon, and Forma - making every laboratory instrument a Thermo product going forward. As a result, Thermo has gone from near obscurity in the life sciences market to gaining industry-wide recognition as a premier supplier of instrumentation products and services.

Thermo has also revamped its entire commercial organization, allowing employees to work together as one cohesive company. Traditional business boundaries have been removed so information can be shared to create a seamless experience for customers. A number of specific initiatives have accelerated this effort, including new customer demonstration centers in key geographic markets, corporate accounts management programs, a company-wide customer call network, and a New Labs program that packages complete solutions for customers who need to equip an entire laboratory. These customer-focused activities complement Thermo"s ongoing product development plans, strategic partnerships, and acquisitions.
