Two new matrix reference materials with certified values of aflatoxins in peanut butter
The JRC-IRMM has released two new reference materials which will help laboratories to better detect aflatoxins - one the most carcinogenic substances known.
The two certified matrix reference materials, BCR-385R (low level) and BCR-401R (very low level), contain certified values of aflatoxins in peanut butter. In order to resemble as much as possible a real-life sample, both reference materials were produced using naturally-occurring raw material, without spiking.
Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins which can be found in food and feed of plant origin. Although adults have a high tolerance for aflatoxin, children are particularly affected by aflatoxin exposure, which may lead to stunted growth and delayed development. The maximum allowed level of several mycotoxins is regulated by European legislation: Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 for aflatoxins in food and Directive 2002/32/EC for aflatoxins in animal feed.
The reference materials are intended for method validation purposes and for performance control. The certified values are based on an interlaboratory characterisation study, and the uncertainties values include contributions from the characterisation study and from homogeneity and stability assessments. The materials have been processed and certified according to the ISO Guides 34 and 35.
