Epoxydation as part of the MOSH / MOAH analysis

Share:

ZeroSept&regAIR septumFood analysis is exposed to a latent risk due to interfering substances. These represent a major issue due to their influence to the limits of quantification and accuracy of the analysis. The sample preparation is therefore extremely complex.

Since interfering substances are also present in a large number of solvents and/or other substances used for sample preparation, it is extremely important to use exclusively very high-quality and pure products. For example, according to BFR regulations, vials and septa are washed with acetone / water, acetone and hexane in order to avoid contamination.

In MOSH / MOAH analysis, particular attention must be paid to olefins as interfering substances. Products made from olefins are widely used in laboratories, raising the risk of false-positive results due to olefin contamination.

The procedure to avoid contamination with olefins is described in the standard DIN-EN 16995: 2017, as well as in the DGF (German standard methods for the investigation of fats, fat products, surfactants and related substances), method C-VI-22.

By means of epoxydation, olefins are converted into polar epoxydes and thus separated from the less polar MOAH in the HPLC process. In addition to centrifugation, the multi-stage process also includes the doping of liquids. It is extremely important that the samples are not contaminated with interfering components (e.g. siloxanes) all along and/or after the epoxydation. During the process, the septum has to be pierced several times, with the risk of contamination from the silicone part of the septum, which can make evaluation difficult or even impossible. The ZeroSept®AIR septum from LABC-Labortechnik provides the remedy.

This innovative septum, composed of PTFE virginal / AIR / PTFE virginal, guarantees excellent tightness and is 100% free of mineral oil. Even after multiple piercings, the sealing properties of this high-purity septum are comparable to those of classic silicone closures. The ZeroSept®AIR septum can be combined with all classic analysis bottles.
