Associate Scientific Director (m/f/d)



  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree with 10+ years of relevant industry experience is required
  • Demonstrated expertise in pathogen immunology and inflammation of the lung or liver such as Hepatitis B infection, cell and molecular biology, in vivo preclinical models with experience in target identification and validation is required
  • Broad and in-depth understanding of drug discovery and early stage development is required
  • Experience leading and managing scientists (associate and PhD level) as a team and cross functionally is preferred
  • Proven capability of working in cross-functional R&D teams; proven project leadership in drug discovery programs is preferred
  • Experience in authoring regulatory submissions is preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; high quality oral presenter; strong publication record is required
  • This position is located in South San Francisco and will require approximately 10% travel, both domestic and international

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the Innate/adaptive immunology in pathogen-associated lung or liver diseases in Discovery team to develop and support novel immune therapeutic agents for microbial infections.
  • Preforming and overseeing the design and optimal execution of decisional experiments
  • Guiding and developing junior scientists within the lab
  • Leading advanced immune technology including single cell analysis and antigen specific responses
  • Providing infectious disease immunology leadership for small molecules and/or biologic drug project teams to optimize, nominate and advance
  • clinical candidates specific for lung or liver infections such as Hepatitis B infection.
  • Guide the establishment of new tools, assays, and relevant disease models
  • Contributing to the strategic direction for Janssen's infectious diseases pipeline
  • Accountable for creating a culture of innovative research and driving a transparent data-driven decision-making culture to enable program prioritization
  • Evaluation new targets, therapeutic concepts, and therapeutic agents
  • Supporting evaluation of external licensing opportunities
  • Working with Research and Clinical Development projects teams to support therapeutic goals
  • Independently managing external collaborations with academic and industry partners
  • Contributing to scientific literature and conferences through publication and presentation of results
